I have a desperate need...
...To read comics. Problem is, I'm not all that knowledgeable about what's out there that doesn't suck.

To give you an idea of what I like: Transmetropolitan, Preacher, Sandman, The Watchmen, V for Vendetta -- basically, smart, fun comics. I'm also interested in the better storylines from things like the X-men and such, but don't know where to start. I also loved old stuff like Weird Tales and such. So, give me your suggestions -- and if you know a good torrent tracker, let me know. ;)

Check out the new Ellis - Doktor Sleepless, I only have a few issues but it's good so far.

Hellblazer is brash, British and big.

Definitely tap [info]bwrynn for titles, he is the one who introduced me to comics.

Oh, god, I forgot about Hellblazer; I wound up reading up to about issue 150 before I ran out of comics. Thanks for the reminder. :)

okay it's just a daily comic and not a comic book but it's brilliant and awesome!!! You must read Dinosaur Comics... it's the same pictures everyday but different words and concepts and awesomeness. Plus there's always an extra section of writing if you scroll over the comic at the end. http://www.qwantz.com/
I get it delivered to my e-mail every day and I bought the book from the first year or so... and I have a dinosaur shirt :) I heart it!!

OH!!!! Also, if you haven't seen the one season that they had of "The Tick" it is entirely awesome and was cancelled for the lamest of all reasons... because the corporate guys couldn't get around the fact that there wasn't a backstory... whatever! You have to watch this one and not the animated one... this one is awesom! http://www.amazon.com/Tick-Entire-Patrick-Warburton/dp/B0000AUHQE/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_k2a_1_img/103-7399894-8527803?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-2&pf_rd_r=0MRGNYX62J5RVV5WJAHZ&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_p=304485601&pf_rd_i=B000FS9MVK

I've been going through the housemates' rather extensive collection, so here are some things I've liked (as well as stuff of my own):

From Hell is as excellent as you've heard. It's also cringe-inducingly unpleasant. I found the excellent outweighed the unpleasant, but YMMV. So far I haven't read anything by Moore that hasn't been top-notch. FH is heavy, and you'll never trust a Freemason again.

I've enjoyed the three Whedon X-men TPBs I've read, although I feel like I'm missing a lot of backstory. All I know about the X-men comes from the three movies, so I recognized faces, but didn't really know histories. It's enjoyable, with plenty of Whedon-speak, but it's also hokey.

I haven't gotten to Y: The Last Man yet, but I hear great things about it.

I'm assuming you've already read Hellboy, but if you haven't, it just might be the first comics series written specifically for you.

I loved Black Hole, but nobody else I know liked it at all. It's a coming-of-age story with a very mild sci-fi angle. It manages to be both lush and bleak at the same time, with an ending that broke my heart.

I got a kick out of the first few issues of The Ultimates, but about halfway through the first "season" it got all superhero/city-destroying-battle cheesey on me. It's a retelling of The Avengers, but since I never read any of the original series, that didn't help me much. If you can get past the, er, comic booky parts, it's a good romp; it's very cinematic.

Fables is a good post-Sandman pomo fantasy comic. I can't believe I just typed that sentence.

As for bittorrents, I tend to get everything off of IsoHunt, which is very good at aggregating trackers from other sites. I don't know about any specific releasers.

Thanks. :) I've read some Hellboy, but the first two compilations didn't really grab me. On the other hand, I should probably still download 'em anyway. The first comic series written specifically for me, however, has to have been Transmetropolitan. ;)

Also, if you like Sandman-ish stuff, check out Lucifer, which is set in the same universe. I just finished devouring the run last night.
